Hide the Price, Keep the Return: How to Set Up Gift Orders on Shopify So Recipients Can Still Exchange

Shopify's default packing slip may not hide prices on gift orders. Set up a price-free gift slip that still lets recipients exchange.

A gift order with the price printed on the slip creates two problems at once. The giver is embarrassed, and the recipient has no clean way to return or exchange the item without it.

Why the packing slip matters

Gift recipients do not have an order number, and they often cannot see what was paid. When the slip shows prices, buyers email support to complain. When the slip hides everything, recipients email support to ask how to exchange. Both turn into tickets in the busiest weeks of the year.

What a price-free slip must remove

Removing item prices is not enough. A good gift slip also drops the order total, taxes, discounts and the shipping line. Anything that lets the recipient back into the price has to go.

Keep the item name, quantity, variant, gift message and the return instructions.

Three setup paths

1. An order printer app with a gift condition

As of this writing, Shopify's default packing slip template does not conditionally hide prices based on a gift flag. Check your admin to confirm for your theme and plan. Order printer apps can read an order attribute, so you can add a condition that swaps in a price-free template when the order is flagged as a gift.

2. A gift options app at checkout

Several apps add an "Is this a gift?" checkbox and a message field. Some can hide prices on the slip automatically. Make sure the flag is passed to your fulfillment partner, not just stored in the admin.

3. A manual tag for low volume

If you ship a few dozen gift orders a week, tag them "gift" and have your team print the price-free version. This breaks at volume, so plan to move to a rule before peak.

Make the exchange work without the price

Put these on the gift slip in plain language.

  • A short return URL or QR code that goes to your return portal.
  • An order reference the recipient can use, not the buyer's account details.
  • What the recipient can choose: exchange, or store credit.
  • The return window, counted from delivery.

Decide up front how value is returned. A common rule is that exchanges are free and the recipient gets store credit at the price paid. The buyer can still be refunded to their original payment method if you prefer, but that needs an extra step.

Write the policy lines

Add two lines to your returns policy page. First, say that gift recipients can exchange or receive store credit without the original order number. Second, say that refunds to the original payment method go only to the buyer. This takes the guesswork out of every ticket.

Test with a real order

Place a gift order to yourself, tick the gift flag, add a message, and check the slip. Confirm that no price, total or tax appears anywhere. Then scan the QR code and walk through the exchange as the recipient.

Gift returns are easier when the return option is built for exchanges, store credit and partial refunds. ShipAid Returns & Exchanges offers discounted return labels, no monthly software fee, and merchant-controlled fees.
