Two Boxes, Two Emails: How to Tell Customers an Order Is Shipping in Pieces Before They Write Support

When an order ships in two boxes, the customer usually gets two shipping emails, two tracking numbers, and a lot of questions. The one that arrives second looks like a mistake. The one that arrives first looks like the whole order, until it does not.

You can fix most of this with three short messages placed at the right moments. None of them needs new software.

Why orders split in the first place

Shopify community threads point to the same few causes. Products are assigned to different inventory locations. One location is short on stock. A product is missing the physical product setting, so it fulfills differently from the rest. Each of these produces separate fulfillments, and each fulfillment sends its own shipping confirmation.

That means the behavior is normal, not a bug. The fix is to tell the customer it is coming, not to hide it.

Watch for early "fulfilled" status

One integration thread reported a worse problem: the whole order was marked fulfilled when only part had shipped, which sent a premature notice and later blocked tracking for the second box. Shopify's team said it was on their roadmap, and another merchant said their native integration worked correctly. The lesson is to test your own setup.

Place a test order that forces a split, ship one item, and see what status and email the customer gets. Do this before peak, not during it.

Touchpoint 1: Before checkout

If certain products ship from different places, say so near the add-to-cart or in the cart. A single sentence is enough.

"Some items ship separately. You will get a tracking number for each package."

Touchpoint 2: The order confirmation

Add a line that tells the customer what to expect for this specific order, if your template allows conditional text. If it does not, a general line still helps.

"Your order may arrive in more than one package. Each package has its own tracking link, and they may arrive on different days."

Touchpoint 3: The first shipping email

This is the highest-value message. When the first box ships and a second is still pending, say so directly.

"Part of your order is on its way. The rest ships separately and you will get another email with its own tracking when it leaves us. You do not need to do anything."

The second email

When the second box ships, link back to the first so the customer sees the pair.

"The rest of your order has shipped. Here is its tracking. Your first package is already on its way, so you may see two deliveries."

Support macro for the ticket that still arrives

Some customers will write anyway. Give your team one reply that answers the question and shows the exact status of each box.

"Your order shipped in two packages. Package one, tracking [link], is [status]. Package two, tracking [link], is [status]. If either has not moved in [X] days, reply here and we will take it from there."

Decide how you charge shipping on split orders

Customers who see two shipping emails may assume they were charged twice. Make sure your confirmation shows one shipping charge for the order, and explain it if the split was your choice and not theirs.

A five-minute test

  • Place a test order with items from two locations.
  • Ship one item and read the email the customer receives.
  • Check the order status in your admin and in the customer account page.
  • Ship the second item and confirm the second tracking number appears.
  • Check that your confirmation email and macro match what actually happened.

ShipAid Fulfillment ships fast and reliably, with 99% 48-hour SLA completion and 99.5% same-day shipping, which means fewer orders need to split in the first place and the ones that do arrive close together.
